Spijkenisse lies on the island of Voorne-Putten, on the south bank of the Oude Maas, just southwest of Rotterdam. For centuries it was a small village on a dike. From the 1970s it grew rapidly as a new town for the Rotterdam region, and the map shows that growth plainly: an old linear core along the water, surrounded by broad rings of planned neighbourhoods.
Those newer districts are laid out in the typical Dutch style of the period, with looping residential streets, cul-de-sacs, ponds and green strips instead of a straight grid. Water is everywhere: drainage canals edge the polders, small lakes sit between housing blocks, and the river forms a firm northern boundary broken only by bridges.
Two structures give the town a clear identity. The Spijkenisserbrug, a bascule bridge, carries road traffic across the Oude Maas, while the metro connects the centre directly to Rotterdam. In the centre stands the Boekenberg, a pyramid-shaped public library designed by MVRDV. A Spijkenisse map poster frames all this within the flat, water-edged landscape of the delta.
The broad Oude Maas runs along the northern side of town, a wide, calm band of water that gives the map a strong horizontal edge and marks the approach from Rotterdam.
Residential districts built from the 1970s onward curve around parks and ponds, creating rounded, cellular shapes that look almost drawn by hand compared with older Dutch grids.
Straight drainage ditches and canals run through the surrounding fields, cutting the open land into long rectangles and repeating the geometry that shaped the whole island.

Ko e hā ʻa Spijkenisse
Many people moved to Spijkenisse to start a household, and the map often ends up in their living room as a record of that choice. It shows the town honestly, as a modern place defined by water, bridges and neighbourhoods designed around daily life.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line to add a street name, a moving-in date or a family name. Pick one of five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and download the files or order a framed print.
