Stafford is the county town of Staffordshire, on the River Sow in the English Midlands. From above, the old centre forms a compact knot of streets on the north bank of the river, largely following its medieval layout. Around it, Victorian terraces and later estates fill out the town, and the railway lines converge at Stafford station, one of the main junctions on the West Coast Main Line.
West of the town, Stafford Castle stands on a hill, the remains of a Norman fortress with a later rebuilt keep. In the centre, the Ancient High House is one of the largest timber-framed town houses in England. The town was also the birthplace of Izaak Walton, author of The Compleat Angler.
