Tabaco lies on the eastern coast of Albay province in the Bicol Region of Luzon, facing Tabaco Bay, with Mayon Volcano rising to the southwest. From above, the city centre gathers along the waterfront around the port. From there, roads and barangays spread inland across the lower slopes of the volcano, and rivers and ravines coming off the mountain cut through the land toward the sea.
The port of Tabaco is one of the main departure points for ferries to the island province of Catanduanes. The city is also known for its traditional blacksmithing, especially the making of bladed tools and knives. Mayon, with its famously symmetrical cone, dominates the landscape and has repeatedly shaped life in the area through its eruptions.
