Tamba was formed in 2004 from six towns in the old Hikami district of inland Hyōgo, so it has several settled cores, not one centre. On a map, built-up areas follow the flat valley floors and rail lines, while wooded mountains take up most of the ground between them and push the streets into long, thin shapes.
One unusual fact about the area is a watershed. In the Hikawa district lies one of the lowest central divides in Japan, where rain can end up either in the Sea of Japan or in the Seto Inland Sea. The Kako and Yura river systems begin close together in these hills.
A Tamba map poster works almost like a relief study: winding roads, rivers and patches of rice fields set in blank highland. The area is also known for Tamba black soybeans and for dinosaur fossils found in local riverbanks, which gives the quiet landscape a surprisingly deep past.
The Hikawa area holds one of Japan's lowest dividing lines between waters that drain to the Sea of Japan and to the Seto Inland Sea.
The former towns sit along separate valley floors, so the map shows several small clusters of streets joined by roads and rail running through the gaps in the hills.
Wooded mountains take up much of the municipality. On the poster they read as open space, which makes the thin lines of valleys and rivers stand out sharply.

A map of Tamba suits people with family roots in rural Hyōgo, or anyone who has walked its valleys, with their paddy fields and black-soybean farms. The sparse, branching lines make a calm, almost botanical image on a wall.
