Tambunan lies in the interior of Sabah, in a valley set among the mountains east of the Crocker Range. At this altitude the air is cooler than on the coast, and the valley floor is covered with rice fields, while forested ridges rise on all sides.
On a map the town is small, with a few streets clustered around the main road, and villages scattered across the valley. Rivers wind through the rice paddies, and roads bend with the landscape, climbing in tight curves where they leave the valley over the passes.
A Tambunan map poster shows a place defined by its setting rather than by its streets. The valley is known for its rice farming and for the Rafflesia, the giant flower found in the nearby forests. It is also linked with Mat Salleh, the local leader who resisted British colonial rule.
Flat paddy fields cover the valley between the mountains, crossed by small roads and streams, forming wide open spaces on the map.
Roads climbing out of the valley twist in tight switchbacks over the ridges, the most dramatic lines in the design.
Rivers meander across the valley between the fields and villages, adding soft curves to the map.
