Téra is a town in the Tillabéri Region of western Niger, west of the Niger River and not far from the border with Burkina Faso. From above, it is a compact settlement in open Sahelian country. A dense core of sandy lanes and walled compounds gives way to broad, empty land, crossed by a few roads and tracks heading to neighbouring towns.
The town serves as an administrative and market centre for its surrounding department. Farming and herding shape the region, and the rhythm of the rainy and dry seasons defines life here. The street pattern is mostly informal. It follows the compound walls and paths that have grown up over time, not a surveyed grid.
