Thanh Liệt lies on the southern side of Hanoi, where the city's continuous urban fabric meets what were once separate villages. From above, it is a close-knit mesh of alleys and small blocks. A few wider roads cut through it, and small pockets of water sit among the housing. The To Lich River passes through the area on its way south.
Like many parts of the capital's outskirts, the area has changed quickly in recent decades. New apartment districts and roads have grown up around the older village cores. The result on the map is a patchwork: organic lanes in one place, straight planned streets in another, and ponds and lakes between them.
A Thanh Liệt map poster captures that in-between character precisely. Without colour, the fine grain of alleys becomes a texture of its own, and the river and ponds become calm open shapes. It is a portrait of the everyday Hanoi that tourist maps leave out.
The river runs through the area in a long, straightened channel. It is one of the few continuous lines in an otherwise intricate network of small streets and alleys.
The older village cores appear as dense clusters of narrow, branching lanes. This fine street grain is typical of the former villages absorbed into Hanoi.
Small bodies of water are scattered through the neighbourhood and break up the dense housing. They give the map a rhythm of open spaces between the built blocks.

For people who live in southern Hanoi or grew up there, this is a map of daily routes more than landmarks, and that is what makes it personal. It also suits anyone who likes the dense, intricate street patterns of Vietnamese cities.
Change the title, add a subtitle such as a street name or year, and edit the coordinates line. The five styles range from the crisp Classic black and white to the softer Paper and Sand. Every digital file is free of watermarks.
