Timóteo lies in the Vale do Aço, the steel valley of eastern Minas Gerais in Brazil. The town sits along the Piracicaba River near its meeting with the Rio Doce, and from above its neighbourhoods fill the valley floor and climb the surrounding hills in curving streets. A large steelworks occupies an extensive site within the urban area.
The town grew around the steel plant founded in the mid-twentieth century, now operated by Aperam, and its layout reflects that history, with company neighbourhoods and planned districts alongside more organic growth. A Timóteo map poster shows how the town fits between river, hills and industry.
To the south lies the Rio Doce State Park, one of the largest remaining areas of Atlantic Forest in Minas Gerais, known for its many lakes. Timóteo forms part of the metropolitan area with Ipatinga and Coronel Fabriciano, and the three towns meet along the river.
