The pilgrims' avenue
From the harbour of Tinos town, a straight avenue rises towards the church of Panagia Evangelistria. It is one of the clearest lines on the map, cutting through the curving lanes around it.

Tinos lies in the northern Cyclades, between Andros and Mykonos. Its outline is long and angular, running northwest to southeast, and the mountainous interior is stepped with dry-stone terraces. The map shows roads spread out to many small villages rather than meeting at a single hub. The densest streets gather around the port on the southern coast.
Tinos town is best known for the church of Panagia Evangelistria, a major place of Orthodox pilgrimage. A long, straight avenue climbs to it from the harbour. The island is also known for its tradition of marble carving, centred on the village of Pyrgos, and for hundreds of ornate dovecotes scattered across its valleys.
A Tinos map poster gives equal weight to the coast and to the network of villages. At the centre of the island, the rocky heights of Exomvourgo, with the remains of a Venetian fortress, rise above the villages. Along the shore, small coves and harbours break up an otherwise steep coastline.

Tinos has an unusually large number of lived-in villages for its size. Linked by winding roads across terraced slopes, they give the poster a fine, evenly spread pattern.
This granite outcrop near the centre of the island holds the ruins of a Venetian stronghold. Roads bend around its base and leave a small blank patch among the villages around it.

Tinos means something personal to people who have walked its footpaths between villages or made the pilgrimage to the church. The island's angular outline and dense inland network look considered and calm in any room.
