The sand dunes
A long coastal strip of open sand north-east of the centre. It has almost no streets, so on the print it reads as a smooth pale shape between the dense town and the sea.

From above, Tottori-shi opens out along the lower Sendai River as it crosses a narrow coastal plain toward the Sea of Japan. The central streets are laid out in a compact, mostly regular grid between the river and the wooded hills to the east. Houses and farmland then thin out into valleys that run back into the Chugoku mountains, so the dense core stays small against a much larger landscape.
The best-known feature sits on the northern edge. The Tottori Sand Dunes run along the shore east of the river mouth and are among the largest dune fields in Japan. On a map they show as an unusually empty band between the sea and the town. Close to the centre, a forested hill carries the stone walls of the old Tottori Castle, and the streets of the former castle town spread out below it.
A Tottori-shi map poster shows how much of the city is shaped by water. It includes the river bends, the straight line of coast, a lagoon lake to the west and the irrigation lines across the plain. In monochrome, the sand dunes become a quiet white field and the mountain valleys turn into fine, branching lines. Tottori is the capital of Japan's least populous prefecture, and the drawing has the same uncrowded feel.

The river crosses the plain in wide bends before it reaches the Sea of Japan. It divides the city into east and west and gives the map its main curved line.

Ko e hā ʻa Tottori-shi
People hang Tottori-shi on the wall because they grew up by the dunes, studied in the city or remember the drive along this stretch of coast. The map holds the whole setting in one frame: the river, the grid, the hills and the sand.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example to add a family name or the year you moved. There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand suits the dunes especially well.
