Tsukuba was built from the 1960s onward as a planned science city, and it still looks planned from above. Broad boulevards run in long straight lines, research institutes sit in large campus parcels, and a continuous pedestrian path threads north to south through parks and the central district, separated from the car traffic. The result is a map with a strong spine and generous open space, unusual for the dense Kanto region.
The University of Tsukuba occupies a long campus along the central axis, and the city hosts dozens of national research bodies, including the space agency's Tsukuba Space Center. Since 2005 the Tsukuba Express has linked the city centre to Akihabara in Tokyo, ending at a station beneath the centre of town.
A Tsukuba map poster makes the planning legible: the grand blocks of the institutes, the gridded new housing, and the older farming villages still scattered in between, with their irregular lanes. To the north the paired peaks of Mount Tsukuba close the view, a landmark long celebrated in Japanese poetry and an easy day climb for students.
A continuous footpath and park corridor runs through the centre of the city, linking campus, parks and the station district on its own route apart from the main roads.
Large institute sites appear as broad parcels with sparse internal roads, giving the map big calm areas quite different from ordinary residential streets.
The University of Tsukuba stretches along the central north to south line, its long campus forming one of the defining shapes of the whole city plan.

Tsukuba is a city many people pass through for a degree, a research post or a few important years, which makes it an ideal subject for a keepsake map. It marks the place where work began, a thesis was finished or a family was started.
Add a custom title and subtitle, perhaps a lab, a graduation year or an address, and keep or edit the coordinates line. Five styles are available, including Blueprint, which suits a city of engineers, alongside Classic, Noir, Paper and Sand.
