Ughelli lies in Delta State in southern Nigeria, on the low, well-watered land of the western Niger Delta. The town has grown outward along its main roads. The map shows a wide, loosely structured street network, with dense neighbourhoods near the centre and newer ones reaching into the surrounding bush and farmland. Streams and wet ground create gaps and curves in the pattern.
It is an important town of the Urhobo people and the headquarters of the Ughelli North local government area. The area is closely tied to the oil and gas industry. Ughelli is also known for its large gas-fired power station, one of the major generating plants supplying the national grid.
