Umi is a town in Kasuya District, a short distance east of Fukuoka city. It lies in a valley surrounded by forested hills. On the map, the streets fill the valley floor and the lower slopes, then stop sharply where the terrain rises. That gives the town a clear, contained outline.
The name is written with characters associated with birth. According to tradition, this is where Empress Jingū gave birth to the future Emperor Ōjin, and Umi Hachimangū shrine, visited by people praying for safe childbirth, is linked to that legend. Like several towns in the area, Umi also has a history of coal mining.
An Umi map poster shows the dense Japanese street pattern, full of narrow lanes and small blocks, pressed into the basin. The larger roads follow the valley toward Fukuoka. The hills around it leave soft, empty margins that frame the town like a border.

The Hachimangū shrine grounds form an open, tree-filled space among the dense streets. It is the town's best-known place.
Narrow residential lanes and small blocks create a dense, detailed pattern. It is typical of Japanese towns and looks striking in print.

Because of its name and its shrine, Umi has a special meaning for families marking a birth. A map of the town, with a name and date in the title, makes a thoughtful gift for new parents.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line are all editable. Choose among Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper gives the fine lanes a soft, traditional feel.
