Ust’-Dzheguta lies in Karachay-Cherkessia, in the valley of the Kuban River, where the foothills of the North Caucasus begin to open onto the plain. Its name means the mouth of the Dzheguta, the small river that joins the Kuban here. On the map, the town follows the valley floor, with its streets arranged in a fairly regular grid between the water and the rising slopes.
Near the town, a large water engineering complex controls the Kuban and forms the head of a canal system that carries water toward the Stavropol region. From above it appears as dams, channels and straight canal lines, a striking man-made pattern beside the river's natural braided channels.
