Valmiera is one of the main towns of Vidzeme in northern Latvia, built along the Gauja River. The river shapes the town. It sweeps past in wide curves, and the historic centre sits on a raised bank above one of its bends. Newer districts spread out on both sides, joined by bridges.
The town dates back to the thirteenth century, when the Livonian Order built a castle here. Valmiera later became a member of the Hanseatic League. The castle ruins and St Simon's Church still mark the oldest part of town, where the street pattern is tighter and less regular than in the later districts. Valmiera is also home to Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences.
Upstream, the Gauja flows through the forests of Gauja National Park, and that green country reaches the edge of town. A Valmiera map poster shows the river's curves, the small historic core and the blocks and wooded areas around them.
The Gauja loops through Valmiera in broad curves. It is the boldest shape on the map and the line that every street seems to lean toward.
The historic centre, with its castle ruins and St Simon's Church, sits on higher ground by the river. Its streets are shorter and less regular than elsewhere.
Bridges link the older centre with the districts across the river. On paper they appear as short, firm strokes over the water.

Ko e hā ʻa Valmiera
Valmiera is a place people often study in, grow up in or come back to for the river and the forests nearby. A map of it has a strong natural shape and an old centre, which suits a clean black-and-white print.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be changed, for example to a name and a date. The five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, each render the Gauja in their own tone.
