Ko e mape
Varappuzha lies just north of Kochi in Kerala, in a landscape where the arms of the Periyar River and the backwaters divide the land into islands and narrow strips. On the map, water takes up as much space as land. Houses line the banks, lanes follow the shores, and fields and coconut groves fill the gaps between channels.
The town's name is known far beyond Kerala in its older form, Verapoly. It was the seat of a historic Catholic mission and archdiocese, whose title is still carried by the Archdiocese of Verapoly based in Ernakulam. Today, Varappuzha is also a link on the main road north from Kochi, which crosses the water on long bridges.
That mix of water and settlement is well suited to a monochrome print.
