Vulcan is one of the towns of the Jiu Valley in Hunedoara County. For more than a century, this deep basin in the Southern Carpathians has been the centre of Romanian coal mining. The town follows the course of the Jiul de Vest. On a map, it forms a long, narrow strip of streets squeezed between mountain slopes.
The town grew rapidly with the mines, and its layout shows it. Older houses sit along the valley road, and blocks of flats were added in the socialist period to house workers. Above the town rise the Vâlcan Mountains, which lend the place its name and now draw hikers and skiers as well as miners.
