Wan Chai lies on the north shore of Hong Kong Island, between Admiralty and Causeway Bay. Its map is layered from the water upward. Reclaimed land along Victoria Harbour holds the Convention and Exhibition Centre. Behind it lie the dense streets of the older district, and finally the steep, green slopes that rise toward the Peak. Each band has a very different street pattern.
The original shoreline once ran close to Queen's Road East, and successive reclamations pushed the coast far out into the harbour, which is why the northern streets are straight and wide. The older area keeps narrow lanes, markets and buildings such as the Blue House. The wider district also includes Happy Valley, whose racecourse forms a large oval on the map.
A Wan Chai map poster fits one of the most intense urban landscapes in the world into a small frame: the harbour edge, the long lines of Hennessy Road and the tram routes, the tight grid of the old district, and the winding roads that climb the hills. The contrast between flat reclaimed land and steep slopes is striking in black and white.

Trams run along Hennessy Road and Johnston Road, long straight routes that cross the district from east to west. They set the rhythm of its central streets.
The large oval of the racecourse, surrounded by roads and high-rise blocks, is one of the most recognisable shapes in the district and a striking centrepiece.

Ko e hā ʻa Wan Chai
Wan Chai is a place of offices, apartments and long nights out, and it holds memories for residents and visitors alike. You can personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with a building name or a date, and use the coordinates line to mark an exact street.
There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Noir suits a district that is busiest after dark. You can download the HD files for $9 in six sizes with no watermark, or order a matte printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
