Whitefield is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, north of Manchester city centre. From above, it has a clear structure. Bury New Road runs through it from north to south as the main axis. The M60 orbital motorway cuts across the southern side in a wide curve, and the Metrolink tram line to Bury runs through on its own corridor.
Between these big lines, the streets are mostly suburban. There are terraced rows near the older centre, then crescents and cul-de-sacs from later decades, with parks, playing fields and golf courses leaving large open areas. The mix of dense and open ground, and the strong transport lines crossing it, make for an unusually graphic map for a town of this size.
