Wieliczka Map Poster & Print
Wieliczka lies just southeast of Kraków, in the hilly country of Lesser Poland. It is known worldwide for its salt mine, which was worked for about seven hundred years. In 1978 it was among the first sites added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Underground are chambers carved entirely from salt, among them the Chapel of St Kinga, with its salt chandeliers and reliefs.
On the surface, the historic town centres on the market square and the medieval saltworks castle that once managed the mining business. The streets rise and fall with the ground, and mine shafts and older works are scattered through the town. Newer housing spreads out on the surrounding slopes, and the roads and rail towards Kraków connect it to the city.
A Wieliczka map poster shows the town above ground, though anyone who has been down the mine will know what lies beneath the lines. It is a fine keepsake from a visit to Kraków, and a meaningful print for people who live in the town or have family ties to its mining past.
