Wonosobo lies in the highlands of Central Java, between the volcanoes Sindoro and Sumbing, whose cones rise on either side of the valley. The town itself sits on sloping ground, and its map shows a compact centre with a town square, streets running downhill, and villages and terraced farms extending up the mountain flanks.
It is best known as the gateway to the Dieng Plateau, a high volcanic area to the north with ancient Hindu temples, crater lakes and steaming fields. The cool climate supports vegetable farming and tea, and the town has its own local dishes, including mie ongklok, a noodle dish closely associated with Wonosobo.
A Wonosobo map poster shows how a highland town fits between mountains. The road north to Dieng forms a clear line, the settlement pattern thins as the land climbs, and the valley between the volcanoes gives the print a natural central axis.
Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing rise on either side of the valley, framing the town and shaping its roads.
A winding mountain road climbs north from the town toward the Dieng Plateau and its temples and crater lakes.
The central alun-alun forms an open rectangle at the heart of the grid, a traditional Javanese town feature.

Ko e hā ʻa Wonosobo
Wonosobo is remembered by those who grew up in its cool air and by travellers heading to Dieng at dawn. A map of the town keeps that highland setting close, even far from Java.
