Wuhe lies in the highlands of western Yunnan, in the Tengchong area close to the Myanmar border. This is mountainous country, and from above, settlement is determined by the terrain. The main town sits on the flatter valley ground, where the roads are straightest, while smaller villages spread up the slopes along paths that curve with the contour lines.
The wider Tengchong region is known for its volcanic landscape and hot springs and has a long history as a trading point on routes between China and Southeast Asia. Farming shapes much of the land around Wuhe, with fields filling the valley floors and terraces on the lower hillsides.
