Xochitepec lies in the state of Morelos, a short distance south of Cuernavaca, in a valley with a warm climate that has long made it a place for gardens, orchards and weekend homes. Its name comes from Nahuatl and is usually translated as hill of flowers, which suits the green surroundings.
The town centre follows the classic Mexican pattern: a main square with its church, and streets extending from it in a slightly irregular grid shaped by the gentle slope. Around it, newer housing developments, country houses and farmland spread out, crossed by ravines and small watercourses running down from the north.
A Xochitepec map poster shows this mix clearly: a traditional centre, walled estates with their own internal roads, and the winding lines of ravines through the countryside. It is a varied composition, and a fitting portrait of one of Morelos's valley towns.
