Ylöjärvi lies just northwest of Tampere, and its map is defined by lakes. Water appears in every direction, from the shores of Näsijärvi to smaller lakes and ponds set among forests. The town centre forms a modest cluster of streets, while residential areas and roads extend outward through woodland, following the gaps between the water.
The municipality grew considerably when Viljakkala joined in 2007 and Kuru in 2009, stretching its borders far to the north. Part of Seitseminen National Park, known for its old-growth forest and bogs, lies within the wider Ylöjärvi area, making it a common destination for walkers from Tampere.
