Yŏnan-ŭp is the administrative centre of Yŏnan County in South Hwanghae province, in the south-west of North Korea near the coast. The land around it is largely flat, part of a farming plain known for rice growing. On the map, the town appears as a compact grid of streets in the middle of wide farmland.
Irrigation defines the surrounding landscape: straight channels, embankments and field boundaries give the countryside a fine, regular pattern. Roads leave the town in several directions toward neighbouring villages and the coast, and low hills rise at the edges of the plain.
A Yŏnan-ŭp map poster shows a small town framed by agriculture. There is no dramatic coastline or skyline here, but the order of the fields and channels, and the way the streets sit within them, makes a striking abstract image when rendered in clean black lines.
The town sits on level land given over largely to rice, and the surrounding map is a regular pattern of field boundaries and small tracks.
Straight channels and embankments cross the plain, adding long ruled lines that frame the town from several directions.
The built-up area is small and orderly, a tight cluster of streets from which roads run out toward villages and the coast.
