Ko e mape
Zamość was founded in 1580 by Chancellor Jan Zamoyski and designed by the Italian architect Bernardo Morando as an ideal Renaissance town. The plan is a regular grid with the palace on its western side and the main square at the centre, all enclosed within a ring of bastioned fortifications. The Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992.
At the heart of the grid is the Great Market Square, a square about 100 metres on each side, lined with arcaded merchants' houses and dominated by the town hall with its curving double staircase. Two smaller squares, the Salt Market and the Water Market, sit close by. Parks now occupy much of the former fortification belt.
A Zamość map poster makes the clarity of this plan its subject. The rectangular grid, the three squares and the outline of the old fortifications read almost like an architectural drawing. Around them, later districts spread in a looser pattern, which only emphasises how distinctive the historic core is when seen from above.
The main square forms the centre of the grid, surrounded by arcaded houses and the town hall, a crisp, geometric space that anchors the entire map.
Streets cross at right angles in a rectangular plan laid out in the late sixteenth century, one of the clearest examples of Renaissance town planning in Europe.
Traces of the bastioned defences around the Old Town, now largely parks and green space, give the historic core its distinctive angular outline.
