Zarzal lies in the northern part of Valle del Cauca, in the broad, flat valley of the Cauca River between the Western and Central Cordilleras of the Colombian Andes. The surrounding land is largely given over to sugarcane, and on a map the fields form large geometric blocks around the town.
The town has a regular grid centred on its main square, typical of Colombian municipalities, with streets extending outward in even blocks. Roads connect Zarzal with Tuluá, Cartago and the rest of the valley, and the Cauca River flows not far to the west through the agricultural plain.
A Zarzal map poster shows a tidy grid set within a very open landscape, where cultivated fields and farm tracks create long straight lines to the edges of the frame. The effect is calm and structured, a clear picture of a town that belongs to the valley's farming economy.
Zarzal's streets form an even grid of blocks around the main square, reading clearly as a compact rectangle on the map.
Large, regular fields surround the town, their boundaries and tracks adding a second layer of straight lines across the valley floor.
The wide, flat valley between two Andean ranges gives Zarzal its setting, with the Cauca River passing to the west.
