Bor sits on the flat left bank of the Volga, directly opposite the hills of Nizhny Novgorod. On a map the contrast is striking. The wide river forms a heavy band along one edge, while the town spreads across low ground dotted with small lakes, old channels and wet meadows. Streets form a loose grid around the centre and thin out quickly into forest and marsh to the north.
The name means pine forest, and woodland still frames the town. Bor is best known for its glassworks, one of the larger glass producers in Russia, and for the cable car that crosses the Volga to Nizhny Novgorod. The cable car opened in 2012 and spans the river in one long line, turning a slow road journey into a short ride above the water.
