Cestas lies on the south-western edge of the Bordeaux metropolitan area, where the suburbs give way to the great pine forest of the Landes de Gascogne. From above, it is not one compact town. It is a series of residential quarters and hamlets set in clearings, joined by roads that cut straight through the trees.
A motorway toward the Atlantic coast runs close by, with business parks along some of its approaches. Cestas is also known for one of Europe's largest solar farms, opened in 2015 on former forest land, which shows on detailed maps as a vast geometric block among the pines. Streams wind through the woodland in thin lines.
