Cottbus is the second-largest city in Brandenburg and the main centre of Lower Lusatia, the region of eastern Germany where the Sorbian minority has its cultural home. Street signs are bilingual, and the city also has a Lower Sorbian name, Chóśebuz. On a map, the Spree runs north through the eastern side of town, its banks lined with green space.
The old town is a small, dense core around the Altmarkt, with streets that still follow their medieval lines. Around it lie wider nineteenth-century and post-war districts, ring roads and railway lines. South-east of the centre is Branitz Park, created by Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau. Its lake and landscaped grounds hold two earth pyramids, one of them rising out of the water.
