Heide is the district town of Dithmarschen in Schleswig-Holstein, a short distance inland from the North Sea coast. Its defining feature is the Marktplatz, often described as the largest undeveloped market square in Germany. On a map it appears as an unusually large open space right at the centre of town.
The streets of the old town surround the square and then radiate outward toward the surrounding villages and the flat marshland beyond. Railway lines meet here too, and the pattern becomes looser and more suburban toward the edges, with drainage ditches and field boundaries visible in the flat country.
Heide is also connected with Johannes Brahms: his father was born here, and a Brahms house in the town recalls the family link. A Heide map poster brings out the scale of the market square against the finer grain of the streets around it, a shape few other towns share.
