Hof sits in the far northeast of Bavaria, close to where Saxony, Thuringia and the Czech Republic meet. On a map, the town gathers along the upper Saale, which enters from the south and winds through the centre before heading north. Rail lines fan out from the station, and the built-up area thins quickly into wooded hills and farmland on every side.
Much of the old town was destroyed by a great fire in 1823, so the rebuilt centre looks different from the tangled cores of many Franconian towns. A long main street runs through it, lined by orderly blocks, while older lanes survive around the churches. A Hof map poster picks up this contrast between the planned rebuilding and the looser streets climbing the slopes above the river.
The town is widely known for the Hof International Film Festival, held every autumn since 1967, and for cold winters that earned the region the nickname Bavarian Siberia. In black and white, the map leaves out the weather and keeps the structure: the river valley, the rail yards, parks at the edges and neighbourhoods spreading up the hills around the town.

Post-1823 centre
After the fire of 1823 the centre was rebuilt on a more regular plan. Its long main street and straight blocks stand out clearly against the curving roads of the outer districts.
Rail junction
Hof has long been a railway junction on the routes between Bavaria and Saxony. The tracks meet at the main station and draw long, sweeping curves across the town.
