Ixelles lies just south-east of the Brussels pentagon, and on a map it looks unusual. Avenue Louise belongs to the City of Brussels and cuts through it, so the commune reads as two pieces. On either side, narrow terraced streets pack tightly together, with a few squares and tree-lined avenues opening up the grid.
The clearest shapes are the Ixelles Ponds, a chain of water in a shallow valley that runs down towards the Abbey of La Cambre and its terraced gardens. Place Flagey sits at the top of the ponds, next to the Art Deco broadcasting building that gives the square its name. Further south-east, the university campuses add larger blocks and open lawns.
The commune is known for its Art Nouveau facades, for the Matongé quarter near Porte de Namur, and as the birthplace of Audrey Hepburn in 1929. Avenue Louise
The long, straight avenue slices diagonally through the commune towards the Bois de la Cambre. It divides Ixelles into two parts and gives the whole composition a strong axis.
La Cambre Abbey
The former Cistercian abbey sits at the foot of the ponds, surrounded by formal terraces and gardens. It shows up as a green pocket framed by the streets that curve around it.
