The reservoir
Flooded valleys form a long body of water with many narrow arms and inlets, giving the map an organic, branching outline unlike any street grid.

Nuozhadu Map Poster & Print
Nuozhadu lies in the steep, forested hills of southern Yunnan, in the Pu'er area, where the Lancang river, known downstream as the Mekong, cuts deep valleys through the mountains. The name is best known for the Nuozhadu hydropower station, one of the largest in China, whose dam holds back a long, branching reservoir. On a map the water appears as a pale, many-fingered shape reaching into side valleys.
The settlement itself is modest in footprint. Roads follow contours rather than straight lines, looping along slopes and dropping in switchbacks toward the river. Built areas are small and scattered, so the most striking elements of the print are the natural ones: the wooded ridges suggested by empty space and the irregular edge of the reservoir where whole valleys have been flooded.
A Nuozhadu map poster is an unusual choice and a quietly dramatic one, especially for engineers and families connected to the dam's construction, or for travellers following the Mekong south toward Laos and Thailand. The Pu'er region is also famous for the tea that carries its name, and plantations on the surrounding hills add another layer of meaning to this landscape.

The dam
Where the Lancang is closed off, the wide reservoir narrows abruptly back into a river, marking the site of the hydropower station that made the name known.
Switchback roads
Mountain roads coil along the slopes in tight bends, drawing fine looping lines that reveal how steep the terrain is even without any shading.

Some places are worth hanging because of what people built there. For anyone who worked on the dam, grew up near the reservoir or travelled the Lancang valley, this print records a landscape reshaped on an enormous scale.
