Uryupinsk Map Poster & Print
Uryupinsk stands on the Khopyor River in the north of Volgograd Oblast, a region of open steppe and farmland. The town is laid out on a regular grid of long, straight streets. To one side the river twists through a broad floodplain of woods, small lakes and abandoned channels. On the map these two halves could hardly look more different.
In Russian speech the town's name is shorthand for a typical provincial town, and residents have taken up that reputation with good humour. Uryupinsk is also linked with goat down and the knitted shawls made from it, and a monument to the goat stands in the town. Local shawls and the steppe farms around them are part of how the town describes itself.
An Uryupinsk map poster makes the most of this contrast. The ordered grid fills one part of the frame and the loose, organic shapes of the Khopyor valley fill the rest. The print is both structured and natural, and anyone who knows the town will recognise it at a glance.

Khopyor floodplain
The river winds through a wide valley scattered with small lakes, oxbows and woodland, adding irregular shapes and curves along one edge of the map.
Town edge
The grid stops where the floodplain begins. That gives the town a sharp edge on one side and a natural frame of water and trees.

A map of Uryupinsk has some wit to it, given the town's place in popular speech, but for people from here it is simply home. The print shows the real streets and the river as they are.
