Usman’ lies in Lipetsk Oblast, in the forest-steppe of central Russia, on the Usmanka river. It was founded in the seventeenth century as a fortress on the southern defensive line that protected Russian lands from raids from the steppe. Today it is a quiet district town, and its map shows a regular street plan in the centre, with lower-density housing spreading along roads toward the edges.
The Usmanka and its floodplain form a natural boundary for the town, with meadows and trees following the river. Beyond, the land is mostly farmland, broken by the edge of the Usman forest, a large area of pine and oak woodland that stretches toward Voronezh and is partly protected as a nature reserve. The forest takes its name from the same river as the town.
