Xituo Map Poster & Print
Xituo is a town in Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County, part of Chongqing, on the south bank of the Yangtze. It grew as a river port on the route that carried salt from the Yangtze into the hills of western Hubei, and it is best known for its ancient stepped street, which runs up the hillside at right angles to the river rather than along it.
That stepped street, often called the Ladder Street, gives the town an unusual map: a single long spine pointing inland from the water, with lanes and terraces branching off on either side. Newer districts spread along the riverbank, while the steep surrounding hills keep the built area in narrow bands between the reservoir-widened Yangtze and the slopes.
A Xituo map poster centres on the relationship between river and hill. In black and white the Yangtze becomes a broad, confident band across the frame, the stepped street reads as a sharp line cutting up from it, and the shape of the terrain is suggested by the way the outer roads bend and double back.

Yangtze riverfront
Since the Three Gorges reservoir raised the river, the Yangtze here is wide and slow, creating a strong horizontal edge that anchors the town on the map.
Terraced hillside
Beyond the old street, roads switch back across steep slopes and farmland terraces, so the outer parts of the map feel layered and sculptural.
