Annecy occupies the northern end of Lake Annecy in Haute-Savoie, where the water narrows and drains away through the Thiou river. On a map, the lake takes up the southeast, a broad pale shape with roads along both shores, while the town spreads north and west across flatter ground. Steep slopes rise to the east and south, pressing the streets into a tight arc around the shore.
The old town lies on both sides of the Thiou and its canals, a dense knot of narrow lanes around the Palais de l'Isle, a medieval building on a small island in the channel. The château stands on the hill just above.
