Bunia sits on a high plateau in Ituri province, in the far northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the escarpment down to Lake Albert and the Ugandan border lying to the east. As the capital of Ituri, Bunia is the administrative and commercial hub of a region known for its gold deposits and fertile highland farming.
