Butembo is a city in North Kivu, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, lying almost on the equator yet high enough to have a mild, cool climate. It has grown into one of the region's major commercial centres, with traders linking the surrounding farms and towns to markets in East Africa. The city spread rapidly, and much of its growth is recent.
