Guocun lies in the northeast of Chongqing Municipality, a region of steep hills, deep valleys and terraced fields. In such terrain flat ground is scarce, and the town's streets have had to adapt, bending with the contours and squeezing onto the valley floor. The result is a map shaped as much by the land as by planning.
Like many smaller towns in the municipality, it serves as a local centre for the surrounding villages, with markets, schools and services concentrated along its main streets.
