Jiagao is a town in the mountainous east of Chongqing Municipality, in the rugged country north of the Yangtze where it runs toward the Three Gorges. Flat land is scarce here. On a map, the town squeezes into whatever level ground a valley allows, and its streets follow the contours instead of cutting across them.
The land around it is mostly steep hillside, much of it farmed in terraces or covered with forest. Roads zigzag up the slopes to link hamlets and farms.
