Khopoli sits in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, right where the coastal lowland meets the steep wall of the Sahyadri range. On the map this position is clear at once: roads, the railway and the Mumbai–Pune Expressway all funnel through the town before twisting up the Bhor Ghat toward the plateau. The Patalganga river runs through the valley alongside them.
The town has a long industrial history. One of the Tata group's early hydroelectric power stations, built in the 1910s, sits here, fed by water brought down from lakes on the plateau above the escarpment. Factories along the river and the highway followed, and the town grew as a stop for travellers heading between Mumbai and Pune.
