Olten lies on the Aare in the canton of Solothurn, between Basel, Zurich, Bern and Lucerne. Its central position made it one of the key junctions of the Swiss railway network, and on the map the tracks fan out from the station in several directions, their curves and parallel lines one of the most striking features of the town.
The river divides Olten in two. On the left bank lies the compact old town, and a covered wooden bridge, the Holzbrücke, crosses the Aare toward the station. Olten is also traditionally regarded as the zero point from which distances on the Swiss railways were measured.
