Sarh is the main city of southern Chad and one of the largest in the country, sitting on the Chari River in the Moyen-Chari region. The land is flat, and the city spreads out from the riverbank in a broad, low grid of streets. Under French rule the town was called Fort-Archambault, and it became a centre for cotton processing, an industry still associated with Sarh.
