Tadmur stands far out in the Syrian Desert, northeast of Damascus, and its existence has always depended on water. The Efqa spring and the palm and olive gardens it feeds form a dense green belt beside the town, the only large area of cultivated ground for a long way in any direction. Around it, the map is almost empty steppe.
Beside the modern town lie the ruins of Palmyra, the ancient city that flourished as a caravan stop on trade routes linking the Roman world with Persia, India and China.
