Acheng is a district of Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province, lying to the southeast of the main city. On a map it appears as a compact urban centre with a regular grid of wide streets, surrounded by open farmland that stretches across gently rolling country. Rail lines and highways connect it with central Harbin, and the Ashi River flows past the town on its way north toward the Songhua.
The area has an important place in Chinese history. Just outside the modern town lie the remains of Shangjing Huining Fu, the first capital of the Jin dynasty, founded by the Jurchen in the early twelfth century. The site, with traces of its earthen walls, is now protected, and a museum nearby tells the story of the Jurchen state that once controlled much of northern China.
