Bernburg lies on the Saale in Saxony-Anhalt, and the river is the organising line of any map of the town. It runs through from south to north, separating the lower Talstadt on one bank from the higher ground of the Bergstadt on the other. Bridges stitch the two halves together, and the shape of the valley decides where the older streets could grow.
Above the river stands Bernburg Castle, a Renaissance residence of the princes of Anhalt-Bernburg set on a rocky rise over the water. From above, the old quarters show the irregular, tightly packed streets of a medieval town, while later districts spread outward in looser blocks, rail lines and industrial sites linked to the area's long tradition of salt and soda production.
