Caen lies on the Orne River about fifteen kilometres from the Channel coast, and on a map the city is organised around a handful of monumental landmarks. The castle founded by William the Conqueror fills a large walled enclosure on a rise north of the centre. The Abbaye aux Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames anchor the west and east sides of the old town.
Much of Caen was destroyed during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, and the rebuilt centre mixes new streets with surviving medieval stonework. A canal running alongside the Orne leads northeast from the port basin to Ouistreham on the coast. The university and the Mémorial de Caen, a museum dedicated to peace, stand on higher ground to the north.
A Caen map poster brings together the curving river, the straight canal, the angular castle walls and the wide green space of the Prairie south of the centre. It is a well-balanced composition in which the medieval, post-war and modern layers of the city can all be read.

The two abbeys
Founded by William and his wife Matilda, the Abbaye aux Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames stand on either side of the centre and frame the old town with their grounds.
