Karahrūd sits in Markazi Province in central Iran, a short distance from Arak, the provincial capital. On a map it reads as a modest, tightly drawn settlement where residential blocks press close together and a few longer roads run across them. The street pattern is dense but not chaotic. It is the kind of town whose shape you learn by walking it more than by seeing it on a postcard.
The land around the town frames it clearly. To one side the high, open plain around Arak stretches out flat and broad. On the other, the ground begins to fold upward into the foothills of the Zagros ranges. Roads toward Arak
Connecting roads leave the built-up area and cross the plain toward Arak. They are the strongest straight lines on the sheet and tie the small town to its much larger neighbour.

Beyond the last houses the road network thins as the terrain rises toward the Zagros. The streets stop and open ground takes over, which gives the map a clear, natural border.
